Bob’s Ideas/feelings and questions surrounding “Ritual”
Connected but Apart,
Leader and Participants structure
Repetitive- action or sound or something (Rhythm)
Works on the brain – gets past the conscious mind
Layers, going deeper, losing yourself in it
Somehow therapeutic or cleansing – mental floss
Can unify a group at least temporarily
Secular, not religious
Pop/ersatz? vs traditional somber e.g. watching TV together and eating popcorn
Borrowing from tradition – e.g. yoga, without going very deep
Conscious mind says it’s not real or worthwhile but we do it anyway
Traditional ritual is at odds with dominant philosophical/cultural values, though may be ripe for re-evaluation or discovery
Works to be considered, in modification/collaboration/conjunction with others’ works.
Wall or hung constellation of Autumn Masks – decorated or plain. Decorated by Autumn or group or invited guests or other artists (maybe some by Bob but idea is to let the piece change as it leaves original sculptor and moves into world)
Large Silver “Dance” lifesize piece which could be suspended from ceiling and float/fly in space above us.
Large Woman’s Head with crazy hair – 7ft H on stand – painted either light and warm or possibly dark
Autumn in Flight (approx. 24” high figures or possibly 36”)– constellation of cast translucent colored resin works, suspended from ceiling, but there should probably be a second (male?) piece that interweaves with it to created a ‘connected’ or ritual element – ie not just one figure repeating. (not yet made)
Clasped Hand/Arms – some sort of large interlocking wall or hung-installation of (hopefully cast wax) arms/hands that explore the notion of Ritual being about either putting one’s own hands together (traditionally ‘prayer’ but now some sort of centering gesture) and/or linking hands with others and having Ritual be a way to bring separate beings into something that feels more like a larger whole. (not yet made)
Other Lifesize figures that I have already made: a) Ceramic men (2), b) Woman wrestling with Mirror (portal to the other worlds)
Emily Texting (2 or more). 85% lifesize – dressed resin figures texting that suggest connection between people not geographically connected, digital rituals, digital lives beyond physical presence. Also just a fun way to see ourselves in a contemporary-lives pose.
Hanging Butoh Figures – 3? Figures modeled after previous series – 40”H figures, hanging from ceiling in somewhat ritualized movement sequence. Probbaly raku ceramic (Not yet made)
Other Butoh 3-figure compositions – These have the feel of people engaged in some sort of avant-garde ritual. 36”H figures that can be set up on a higher surface. First three is a woman being held horizontally a few feet above ground by two men. Second is set on a rooftop structure with woman sitting squawking like a crow and two men doing some sort of tai-chi-like dance on the rooftop.
Large textile/tapestry images of heads in some sort of interconnected form which could hang or be on wall, and which could be a ‘screen’ for some projection. They could feel active or reflective. I would spray-paint them in a high-contrast sort of loose style. Something like street art. Fairly monochromatic. (Not yet made)
3-channel Video of my sculpting with one channel being on the model, matching my careful close-up viewing, 2nd channel being on the piece itself as it evolves and 3rd channel being on me with lots of cutouts to other art and concepts about the piece, influences, other things which get at the complex feelings I am having about the piece that I am trying to ‘bake’ into it during the creation. Maybe also image of the finished piece. I like this video idea but it is not really about Ritual yet. (Not yet made)
Several of these exist or could be fairly quickly finished/fixed up to exhibit but most do not yet exist (those labeled ‘Not Yet Made’). Of the new pieces not able to do all so would need to choose from among these the best options.
I would want to let new pieces in particular evolve in conjunction with active interaction with all of you so the pieces are arising in response to you- are more collaborative. (And vice versa)
Live performance for me is limited, but I could always sculpt live on site (presumably Autumn or Katy or other performance artist). There may be other live/performance options I am not thinking of yet.
Still Missing :
Something about Clasped Hands installation -- need a drawing or image.
Also Something about 3-channel Video.
Can we do something with the totemic Hands?
Other pieces that come up in conjunction with collaboration ideas.
What might I be able to do on the outside of the building?
What about large spray-painted head or head-in-relation compositions on Burlap or other large format textiles hung in banner format?
