This page shows the creation of Alex Head
--a plaster press mold approach to creating
flat-against-wall sculptures or wall-hung
sculptures of this large head, entitled Alex

Above is the original clay of the
head.  On the left, we have
begun the process of creating
the mold, splashing a thin coat
of plaster carefully against the
surface of the clay to pick up the
texture and shape of the
original.  On the right is the clay
after pulling the mold off --
sometimes creating a fleeting
sculpture more interesting than
the original!  
On the lower left is a closeup of
the mold, looking deceptively
like a positive due to the nature
of the photograph.  Finally, on
the bottom right is my
moldmaker Fiona proudly
standing next to the product of
another day's work.

I will use the mold to create pressed slabs
in the shape of the head which can be fired
in a large kiln and either wall hung or
mounted on a pole for installation near a
wall.  More photos as the process
continues.
